A split system consists of two main parts (Indoor and Outdoor Unit) and are available in Heat pump configuration. It uses refrigerant as the heat exchange fluid and has an evaporator, compressor, and condenser as separate components. In most modern commercial applications, the compressor and condenser are combined into a single piece of equipment called a condensing unit outdoor unit, and the evaporator forms the indoor unit along with other components. Refrigerant piping and wiring connects the indoor and outdoor units to form the system.
Systems are available in different guises to take on board different room applications. Also available are multi splits, where one outdoor unit serves a number of indoor units.
